SAILING

#11 – Living the Sicilian Dream

At the end of October, we finally reached the port of Marina di Ragusa. The past few months spent at sea have been a diverse experience, presenting us with both highs and lows. We have experienced unforgettable moments and also tackled challenges that have pushed us to our limits. Living on a sailboat is a unique experience that demands a high workload and responsibility. Monitoring the weather, checking the anchor, and daily tasks like preparing meals and keeping the boat clean can be exhausting.

In spite of these challenges, life on a sailboat offers a unique sense of freedom and adventure, rewarding us with unforgettable moments. Nonetheless, we are relieved to take a break and prepare for the upcoming sailing season. The liveaboard community in Marina di Ragusa greets us warmly and offers the opportunity to relax and make new friends.

Our goal is to make the most of our time in the harbor. We have a long list of tasks to complete and to improve our boat and make upgrades that will enhance our sailing experience. From checking the engine and electronics to adjusting the boat's interior, everything is planned for the winter in Sicily.

Despite the huge task list, there are also moments of joy and community. We frequently meet with other sailors, sharing experiences and knowledge, and learning from each other.

After all the hard work on our sailboat in Marina di Ragusa, it's time for a well-deserved break. We decide to spend a few weeks in Switzerland to visit our families and friends and unwind. It's a beautiful feeling to return and be welcomed by all the people we missed so much.

Upon our return to Sicily, we decided to rent a car and explore the island's baroque cities. These cities, including Ragusa Ibla, Noto, Siracusa, Taormina, Modica, and Scicli, are undoubtedly architectural gems in the heart of the Mediterranean. Their magnificent churches, palaces, and squares astounded us with their lavish facades, rich decorations, and curved lines. The baroque buildings blended harmoniously with the island's scenic beauty, creating a unique atmosphere that deeply impressed us.

Each of the baroque cities we visited had its own charm and stories to tell. Ragusa Ibla, with its medieval hilltop town and elegant Baroque-style cathedral, was a true standout. Noto, a small town with winding alleys and old-world charm, offered a more intimate view of Sicilian life. Modica, known for its famous chocolate and stunning architecture, was a must-see destination. And finally, Scicli, with its beautifully restored Baroque palaces and churches, was the perfect end to our journey.

Together, these cities offered an unforgettable experience for any architecture and history enthusiast. We can certainly say that Sicily is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe. The beauty, culture, and history of these baroque cities have taken us on a journey that we will carry in our hearts forever.
