SAILING

#9 – Discovering the beauty of Sardinia by sailboat

In late summer, we embark on our next big crossing, sailing south from the beautiful island of Menorca towards Sardinia. The wind is our companion, and the waves are our music.

Markus decides to sail to the north of Sardinia and wants to wait for the right weather window. We and Eilaean wake up early to a strong wind and hoist the sails, eager to embark on our next adventure. As the night falls, the wind subsides, and we find ourselves sailing under a blanket of stars. Even in the middle of the ocean, the warmth of summer lingers, and the Milky Way illuminates the sky in all its splendor, free from any light pollution. We lay down on the cockpit floor, marveling at the twinkling stars above as Lumos glides gently through the waves. It's a magical moment of tranquility, losing ourselves in the beauty of the night sky and the serenity of the sea.

The next day, we reach our anchorage on the peninsula Isola di San Pietro, feeling like we're in paradise. The crystal-clear water and untouched nature along the coast are breathtakingly beautiful.

In Porto Pino, we anchor in front of a picturesque fishing village, at a long white sandy beach with turquoise water. There are small cafes, restaurants, and bars right on the beach where we indulge in local specialties. We eat the best pizza of our lives and can't get enough of it, enjoying it for three days in a row.

An approaching storm reminds us that we can't just drift aimlessly. The weather sets the pace, and we must follow accordingly. We decided to stay in the same bay but anchor slightly southeast to avoid the big waves. Despite the wind reaching 45 knots and lightning striking very close, we managed to ride out the storm for one day and one night at anchor.

We sail in small stages along the coast until we reach Villasimius in the southeast of Sardinia. Here, we anchor in crystal-clear turquoise water next to a stunning white sandy beach. The surrounding nature is simply indescribably beautiful. Little did we know, we had arrived just in time for the GC32 sailing world championship in Villasimius, and we were able to witness Alinghi and other teams compete in a race for the title right beside us.

Here, in the heart of the Mediterranean, we enjoy our time in front of Villasimius, while waiting for the perfect weather window for our final big crossing to Sicily.
